February 3--Samso, Denmark

The Island of Samso is the most energy independent place on earth. In 1997 the residents began a challenge to become 100% energy self-sufficient within 10 years. Today, 100% of their electricity comes from windpower, 70% of their heat comes from solar panels and biomass, and many cars and farm equipment are powered by rapeseed oil.

Samso is now called Energy Island and has become a model in the areas of energy ownership and alternative resources. They even have their own energy theme song.
